Today is Bastille Day, a name given by English-speaking countries for French National Day. Bastille Day commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, as well as The Fête de la Fédération, an event which took place exactly one year after the fortress was captured to celebrate unity and peace in France. Each year, France and countries around the world celebrate Bastille Day with feasts and fireworks. Even Claude Monet joined the festivities, observing a feast in honor of Bastille in 1878.
